Lee's Obsession with History

Something Lee thinks about all the time, and I think a driving force in his life, is his ambition to be “a man in history”. Like his Marxist idols, Lee has always dreamed about being part of something bigger. From his childhood delusions of jumping across rooftops, to his later defection to Russia, and then finally being involved in the assassination of JFK, Lee has felt like it was his “destiny” to make an impact on history. We’ve talked in class about why Lee so strongly needs to be recognized—and hailed as a hero—by others and I think it stems back to his childhood. Lee didn’t have a close knit family and moved around a lot which often made him an outsider. Even when he has friends as a child, Robert and his sister, they don’t understand Lee and their parents are wary of him. Patience

Throughout all of Room I’ve been unbelievably impressed with how patient Ma is with Jack. I have a little brother who recently turned six years old, and so I have some experience interacting with children of that age. They are energetic, always wanting someone to play with them, and occasionally out of control. Even though I know it’s due to his age, I sometimes get frustrated with my little brother when I’m trying to talk to my mom and he constantly interrupts, or if we’re playing a game and he gets bored and decides it would be more fun to just throw all the game pieces at me. In this sense, I’m not always as patient as I could be with him. My mom is more patient but sometimes she too gets frustrated, and sends my brother to his room to chill for a bit. Unlike most parents, Ma never gets any time away from Jack. Not that I think she doesn’t enjoy spending time with him, but I can’t imagine how draining it would be to have to match a 5 year old’s energy all day every day. Most

Selfless Gregor

After reading the first two parts of The Metamorphosis something that really struck me was just how selfless Gregor is. As we can see from his dialogue with his parents and the chief clerk in the first section, even before his transformation Gregor’s main priority was to work as a travelling salesman to support his family even though he hated the job. He defined himself by his job and was horrified when he woke up as an insect, not because he has literally been transformed into another body, but because he might miss work. In part two, we see what Gregor’s daily life is like as an insect and it has also has hints of selflessness. When Gregor finds out that his father has been taking money out of what Gregor has earned to save he isn’t upset that his dad was taking his earnings but was instead “delighted to hear of this unexpected thrift and foresight” (Kafka, 85).
