Lee's Obsession with History

Something Lee thinks about all the time, and I think a driving force in his life, is his ambition to be “a man in history”. Like his Marxist idols, Lee has always dreamed about being part of something bigger. Billy Pilgrim vs Steve Rogers

In class we’ve talked a lot about how Slaughterhouse Five isn’t like typical war novels, we’ve even discussed how it would be an anti-war novel. As a disclaimer, I don’t read a lot of war novels or watch a lot of war movies so sorry if I miss something in this post. I’m going to compare Billy Pilgrim, the main character (if you can even call him that) of Slaughterhouse Five to protagonist one of the only “war” movies I’ve ever watched: Captain America. Physically, Steve Rogers aka Captain America starts off as being too small and weak to join the war. In this case, he is similar to Billy Pilgrim who is also lacking the ideal soldier physique; Billy is described as being “tall and weak, and shaped like a bottle of Coca-Cola” (Vonnegut 23). However, eventually Steve is selected to be part of an experiment that turns his body into that of an ideal soldier, and earns him the name Captain America. Patience

Throughout all of Room I’ve been unbelievably impressed with how patient Ma is with Jack. I have a little brother who recently turned six years old, and so I have some experience interacting with children of that age. They are energetic, always wanting someone to play with them, and occasionally out of control. Even though I know it’s due to his age, I sometimes get frustrated with my little brother when I’m trying to talk to my mom and he constantly interrupts, or if we’re playing a game and he gets bored and decides it would be more fun to just throw all the game pieces at me. In this sense, I’m not always as patient as I could be with him. My mom is more patient but sometimes she too gets frustrated, and sends my brother to his room to chill for a bit. Unlike most parents, Ma never gets any time away from Jack. Not that I think she doesn’t enjoy spending time with him, but I can’t imagine how draining it would be to have to match a 5 year old’s energy all day every day. Most
